PŪHOI TO WARKWORTH MOTORWAY, NZ
IECA Australasia 2019 Field Tour to the Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway project, New Zealand.
SAVE THE DATE
Wednesday 20th November 2019
IECA Australasia is excited to be working with the NX2 Northern Express Group to coordinate a field trip to view the Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway project on Wednesday 20th November 2019.
The Pūhoi to Warkworth project will extend the four-lane Northern Motorway (SH1) 18.5km from the Johnstone’s Hill tunnels to just north of Warkworth.
The new motorway will provide increased safety, more consistent travel times and create a more robust and reliable road for freight movement between Northland and the Upper North Island.
It will also improve connections between the growth areas in the northern Rodney area of Auckland and reduce congestion at Warkworth by providing a bypass for through traffic. Time savings are expected to be greater for trucks due to reductions in grades and a better road layout, which helps heavy vehicles maintain a higher average speed.
In November 2016, the Transport Agency awarded a Public Private Partnership (PPP) contract to the Northern Express Group (NX2) for the project. Under the PPP contract, the Northern Express Group will finance, design, construct, manage and maintain the Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway for the 25 years that will follow the expected five-year period to build the motorway. Full ownership of the highway will remain with the public sector. The Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway will open to traffic in late 2021. It is the first stage of the Ara Tūhono – Pūhoi to Wellsford project.
You will need full PPE to visit the site: safety cap lace-up boots, long sleeves and long pants, safety vest, hard hat and safety glasses. Spares will not be available on the day. If you arrive without all of the above PPE you will not be able to participate in the site visit.
This opportunity is open to IECA members and non-members from both New Zealand and Australia.
IECA Australasia encourages Australian delegates to attend this study tour and witness first-hand the challenges this project presents and the innovative way that the project team has embraced environmental management.
