IECA Australasia President's Message

We are hoping everyone is winding down and planning quality break away from work. As we prepare to celebrate this holiday season, I hope everyone can reflect on their year, including both achievements and challenges. We would like to say a massive thanks to all our members, contributors and sponsors. You have made our organisation stronger this year particularly through our field days and extremely successful conference at Queenstown. We really do appreciate your hard work and dedication.

One of the great successes we would like to recognise is the partnership with Soil Science Australia for the new RSP-ESC accreditation Read More...

IECA Australasia would like to congratulate our award winners and showcase their award-winning projects via this special Chapter Newsletter.

The IECA Australasia Environmental Excellence Awards aim to raise the standards of the erosion and sediment control industry by rewarding innovation and outstanding achievement.

WINNER - Te Ara o Te Ata: A Legacy Project.

The Mount Messenger Alliance is delivering an essential infrastructure link: Te Ara o Te Ata (TATA).This will be a benchmark for future New Zealand infrastructure projects and raise the bar on what good environmental practice looks like. Our highly skilled team of contractors, consultants, and iwi partners Ngāti Tama are proud to be delivering a legacy project. Read More...

Highly Commended - “Skyridge - A Beacon of Excellence in Urban Development Erosion and Sediment Control”

Shadforth is constructing a masterplanned community “SkyRidge” at the foothills of the Gold Coast Hinterland. The project is expertly navigating ESC challenges posed by the difficult landscapes, showcasing best practice ESC that prioritises environmental protection at the same time as achieving project goals.

Regular assessments of river and coastal health continue to show little improvement in water quality, and the development industry is often identified as one of the key contributors to this. Challenging topography, hard dollar budgets, complex staging, and a limited understanding or experience with erosion and sediment control are identified as the main reasons for this. Read More...

Merit - On the (not so) straight and narrow highway; great outcomes in difficult conditions.

The O Mahurangi Penlink project is a 7km highway currently being built in north Auckland, New Zealand. The highway alignment traverses urban, peri-urban, rural and forestry landscapes, both native and exotic, with a 535m river crossing featuring New Zealand’s first extradosed bridge. The project’s boundary is tight to minimise the impact on the surrounding environment and communities. This makes it tricky when it comes to implementing erosion sediment controls (ESC) in challenging terrain. Read More...

WINNER - Challies Island bridge

At Taylors Contracting we pursue knowledge and practices that lead to more environmentally friendly and ecologically responsible decisions. This helps protect the environment and sustain its natural resources for current and future generations. We recognise the importance and sensitivity of the landscape and fresh water,  implementing measures to avoid or mitigate the effects of each project. Read More...

Highly Commended - Perched on the edge: An innovative approach to DEB design.

In response to the challenges posed by the landscape in which we work, we were faced with a dilemma: a treatment device was required but there was nowhere to put it. The only reasonable space available was perched on the edge of a landslip-prone 30° bank discharging into a live waterway upstream of a sensitive receiving environment. Given the nature of the environment, the location was undesirable: concentrated flows from the outlet pipe would be a high risk for landslips. However, with such a constrained site the alternatives were limited. As such, we developed an innovative Decanting Earth Bund (DEB) outlet structure. Read More...

Merit - Ipswich City Council ESC Compliance Program

Ipswich is one of the fastest growing areas in Queensland, Australia. Within the last 17 years, the population of Ipswich has increased by 110,000 people and currently holds an approximate resident population of 251,000. Additionally, with a higher focus on affordable housing within this economic
climate, Ipswich has been identified as a Priority Development Area. The Ripley Valley Priority Development Area is one of the largest urban growth areas in Australia and covers 4680 hectares to potentially develop 48,750 dwellings to house a population of 131,000 people.. Read More...

Soil and Water Management
Attainable, Sustainable and Innovatable!

2024 IECA Australasia Conference & Expo

The 2024 IECA Australasia Conference & Expo, was held at the picturesque Millenium Hotel in Queenstown, New Zealand. During the conference delegates engaged, collaborated and discussed innovative solutions that effectively halt the spread of sediment, safeguarding our environment and ensuring sustainable land and water management practices. With a focus on both established concepts and emerging technologies, during the conference we dove into the subtleties that can determine success or failure in our endeavours. We examined past mistakes, embraced new approaches, to work smarter in navigating the complexities of managing land and water resources.

This year we had:
170 attendees | 26 presentations, including 2 keynotes and 2 roundtable sessions | 8 sponsors | 13 exhibitors.

Tam Do - 2023 IECA Aust Young Professional Scholarship Recipient

Hello hello!

My name is Tam Do and I’m writing to officially hand over to Thea Dudgeon, this year’s IECA Vital Chem Young Professional Scholarship recipient. My time with IECA as part of this program has been nothing short of amazing, with a myriad of learnings of development opportunities presented across attending the 2023 and 2024 conferences, as well as taking part in the IECA board meetings and committee catch ups.

All of this culminated in the conference in beautiful Queenstown, starting off with the final IECA Board Meeting I will attend this year. I’ve appreciated learning the comings and goings of a proficient organisation, particularly as we welcomed two new members appointed to the board - Steph Kirk and Chris Wilcox. Hearing CEO Samantha Roe contribute from the Global lens also helped my understanding of how other Chapters can try to align to the organisation’s vision and continue backing up the erosion and sediment control industry. Read More...

Thea Dudgeon - 2024 IECA Aust Young Professional Scholarship Recipient

Hi everyone,

My name is Thea Dudgeon, and I had the incredible honour of receiving the 2024 Young Professional Scholarship, which allowed me to attend the IECA Australasia Conference in Queenstown, New Zealand. This opportunity enabled me to fly across the ditch and immerse myself in all things ERSED, from gathering with industry experts, participating in field tours and attending insightful presentations.

As this was my first IECA conference, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. However, it turned out to be an unforgettable experience, from meeting suppliers in the trade hall and learning about industry breakthroughs to attending events like the Young Professionals’ Drinks and the Walter Peak Dinner. The location of the conference was a true standout - New Zealand is renowned for its diverse ecosystems and stunning landscapes. However, the country is no stranger to environmental challenges, from steep topography and heavy rainfall to unique and sensitive ecosystems that require particular attention to ERSED. Read More...

A new accreditation in sediment and erosion control

A new accreditation in Erosion and Sediment Control—the Registered Soil Practitioner – Erosion and Sediment Control (RSP-ESC) accreditation—is providing assurance to practitioners and industry in Australia and in New Zealand.

The accreditation has been developed in partnership between the Australasian International Erosion Control Association (IECA Australasia) and Soil Science Australia (SSA) and was launched today at the IECA Australasia Conference at Queenstown, New Zealand.

“Erosion and sedimentation are critical issues that impact ecosystems, waterways, and infrastructure. Poorly managed construction sites and land disturbances can result in the loss of valuable soil, contamination of water sources, and damage to surrounding environments,” said Shonelle Gleeson-Willey, Chair of the Certification Taskforce. Read More...

Membership structure and fee changes

As IECA Australasia chapter has been through the reunification process with IECA HQ since 2020, we are now getting closer to full amalgamation of membership levels, fee structure, online platform and management systems. As our Chapter continues to work diligently for Chapter members to minimise operating costs and membership fees, whilst maximising the benefits for members, the Chapter Board has reviewed the new structure and associated fees and voted that the Australasia Chapter will adopt the new structure and fees as of 1st January 2025.  Read More...
